Yule Tide Back Log -Pentax *ist DS - 24 December 2006
Ever Wondered about the phrase "Back Log"?
"Back Log" is an old Cheshire phrase or (really) an ancient custom.
On Christmas Eve a 'Lord of Misrule' was appointed by the estate workers/villagers for the local Lord: he organised
the festivities while the Yule log burned in the village hall or Manor hall. To make sure that it lasted as long as possible,
the Yule log (a Viking word meaning heavy tree trunk) was secretly soaked in the local stream or river before being installed
in the Hall great fire place. The 'Lord of Misrule' , sitting astride the the Yule Log entered the Hall to start his reign.
The great Yule Log was then placed on the fire and became the "Back Log". Tradition has it that whist the log burned,
merrymaking, feasting and serious drinking went on in the Hall, and it was a holiday (Holy Day) for everyone.
When the Back log was completely devoured by the flames, the festivities ended as did the reign of "The Lord of Misrule"
Then all the villagers and \estate workers had to go back to work and catch up on the "BACK LOG" - of jobs.
