So I'll walk where I will over mountain and hill
And I'll lie where the bracken is deep
I belong to the mountains, the clear running fountains
Where the grey rocks lie ragged and steep
I've seen the white hare in the gully's
And the curlew fly high overhead
And sooner than part from the mountains
I think I would rather be dead

A trick of the light?
Surely not
Perhaps some visual memory in the corner
of my shattered sight

A glint of snow on a mountain top
The flash of a peregrines wing
A site to make any heart quicken, then stop.
Just a memory, not the real thing.

Was it so long ago we climbed and walked
Roughly shod and able bodied
All day and all night we talked,
And time has the final word, so sordid.

So,  Solitary and yet satisfied, that's fair
No pardons here on this final breath
Will my memory carry me through the icy air
For I too, have a rendezvous with death.

For Religious Climbers- Some Biblical text
" I shall lift up mine eyes unto the hills O lord, whence forth shall come my salvation"
(Carved into a wooden beam in the little Church at Wasdale.)

So here's to my friend
so properly buried

Its a pity the Dead Man
wasn't properly buried!

Here lies the body of Morris Potts
He remembered his rope
but forgot his knotts

J.B's Song

We will climb today said my friend
Not I, said I, Not today.
We can walk the ridge today, she said
Not I, said I, Not Today
Lets scramble on Tryfan, they cried.
Not I,  said I, Not on this cold icy day

Where is my Friend now, and where is she today?
Are they scrambling without me?
Too bloody right,  they never ask me out to play

DJF

The Wound

I climbed to the crest
And, fog festooned,
The sun lay west
Like a crimson wound

Like that wound of mine
of which, none new,
For I 'd given no sign
That it pierced me through.

Thomas Hardy

A Cautionary Tale

The sun was hot
So he drank his fill
From the cool flowing waters
of Sour Milk Ghyll
But Little he new
That just out of view
Splitting the rushing stream in two
Were the rotting remains of an Herdwick Ewe.
